Description

Makueni County which covers an area of 8,034.7 Km2is one of the forty seven countiesin the country. The County borders several counties which include Kajiado to the West,Taita Taveta to the South, Kitui to the East and Machakos to the North. It lies betweenLatitude 1º 35 and 3000 South and Longitude 37º10 and 38º 30East.The county lies in the arid and semi arid zones of the eastern region of the country. Themajor physical features in Makueni County include the volcanic Chyulu hills which liealong the southwest border of the county in Kibwezi West Constituency, Mbooni Hills inMbooni constituency and Kilungu Hills in Kaiti constituency which rise to 1,900m abovesea level. The county terrain is generally low-lying from 600m above sea level in Tsavoat the southern end of the county.The County is currently divided into nine sub-counties and twenty five divisions. Thesub counties are Makueni, Kilungu, Mukaa, Kibwezi, Kathonzweni, Makindu, MbooniEast, Mbooni West and Nzaui. There are six parliamentary constituencies, namely Kaiti,Makueni, Kibwezi East , Kibwezi Westy Mbooni and Kilome. There are 30 countyassembly wards.In the year 2012 the projected population in the county was 922,183 consisting of449,036 males and 473,147 females.Chapter One gives the background information on the socio-economic and infrastructuralinformation that has a bearing on the development of the county. The chapter providesdescription of the county in terms of the location, size, physiographic and naturalconditions, demographic Plans as well as the administrative and political units. Inaddition, it provides information on infrastructure and access; land and land use;community organizations/non-state actors; crop, livestock and fish production; forestry,environment and climate change; mining; tourism; employment and other sources ofincome; water and sanitation; health access and nutrition, education and literacy, trade,energy, housing, transport and communication, community development and SocialWelfare.Chapter two discusses at length the major development challenges facing the County. Itfurther highlights cross cutting issues such as population growth, poverty, environment,HIV and AIDS, gender etc. A SWOT analysis of each cross cutting issues is alsoprovided. Finally a detailed matrix giving an analysis of major development issues, theircauses, objectives and the proposed strategies and targets are discussed.Chapter three presents a spatial plan for the county. It presents the necessarycoordination between the various sectors.Chapter four discusses at length the County Integrated Development Plan linkages withthe Kenya Vision 2030 and the Constitution of Kenya. A brief status of MillenniumDevelopment Goals at the County level is also provided.
